Lemon, and what the research says about mood and alertness.
By Cravista · 3 min read · 8 October 2026
Lemon is the brightest note in the Morning candle, and it's also one of the better-studied citrus oils for mood and alertness. A 2024 systematic review pulled together eight clinical studies of lemon essential oil across clinical and educational settings and found a consistent pattern: exposure was associated with lifted mood, lower self-reported anxiety, and improved markers of attention.
What a review like this can and can't say
A systematic review is a summary of other people's trials, not a single clean experiment — its strength is that an effect shows up across different rooms and populations, and its weakness is that it inherits every limitation of the studies inside it: small samples, self-reported outcomes, and the perennial problem that inhaled doses are hard to standardise. “Consistent across studies” is a real and useful signal. It is not the same as “clinically proven.”
Why it's in the Morning candle
We chose lemon to open the day because the evidence points the way you'd hope a morning scent would — toward alertness and a lighter mood — and because it pairs cleanly with bergamot and peppermint without any of them needing to overclaim.
